Nobody came in apartment buildings. Nobody had enough people or ammo to deal with it. Nobody was crazy enough to try. Not when there were block and block of them all in a row. Jala laughed as she stared at the ceiling as she heard the rest of her small crew moving about the apartment. They really were just that crazy. But if she could convince them to get that building next door they could get a real good fort situation going.

“Ah hell,” Jason said as he picked up her legs and sat down on the tattered couch. “Why you making that face?”

“What face?,” Jala asked. Still smiling big as ever. Jason shook his head. He knew his sister was thinking again.

“You’re smiling! Why are you smiling?,” Monique squealed at her friend before poking her cheek and sitting on the floor beside her.

“I just had an idea.”

“Whatever it is, absolutely not!,” Alex screamed from the kitchen.

“What? It’s just a little demo, create a good little obstacle. A little reno in the building to keep the live ones from getting to us too easy.”

“And the dead ones? Bringing down a building like that will probably bring them down from the fucking desert,” Alex shouted.

“So will you yelling like that,” Monique said.

“It’s not a good idea and it’s not possible. Where would we even get explosives?”

“Well, the docks—“

“Are like 30 miles away,” Alex said as he tossed a water bottle at her.

She caught it and laughed, “Everybody is dead and there’s no traffic any more.”

“Less all the damn cars stuck on the freeway with dead inside,” Monique said as she drew her legs up to her chest and leaned against the couch.

“You guys are no fun,” Jala said. “Well how about bobby trapping this place. And we probably should use the roof to get in and out of here. Dead can’t climb and the living can’t without help.”

“What’s got you in post apocalyptic nesting mode, sis?”

“Well, I noticed something the other night. We might not be the only ones that can clear a building.”

“The hell are you taking about,” Alex said as they finished the morning routine of loading down with ammo and weapons.

“Four, maybe five buildings down. Flashes and fireworks in the windows. Looked like someone was clearing floors. Took about an hour, maybe. Then They piled up the dead all around. Vented the place. Same as we do.”

“But you didnt see anyone?”

“Nope. We could just check it out,” Jala said with a smile.

Monique and Alex exchanged concerned glances.

“Look, we’ll go. You guys get posted up across the street and we’ll be fine. Maybe it won’t be as bad as we think,” Jason said with a grunt as he got up.

“You know you two were my friends first, right?,” Jala said before popping Monique gently on the head with a pillow.

“Yeah, but Jason thinks. You just…do shit,” Alex said.

“But do you ever get in trouble?”

Monique and Alex exchanged a glance and laughed. “Also Jason’s doing.”

“Well, whatever. He thinks but I create. Be grateful. One of us dies, either we’ll die fun or be bored as hell.”

They all laughed as Monique got up to help Jala out of her lazing about and tossed her a bulletproof vest from the pile on the chair nearby.
